Most important show ring lesson? Keep riding. Don't stop showing your horse, even though you've just received a penalty for something. That is ONE maneuver and you still have 6 or 7 more to go. Judges generally mark each maneuver without consideration of the one before it (of course there ARE exceptions) and you may still place high enough to receive a paycheck - case in point John Slack on Ray Gay Quixote in the NRHA Open Futurity (1997?) John knew he had overspun and got 1-1/2 penalty points plus the minus maneuver scores. He went on and showed the heck out of his horse and ended up winning it!

Even if you zero the run, turn it into something constructive. You've paid for that time in the ring. Use it to school your horse.
